Do you run Ubuntu on a virtual machine?
[hr]

Edit:
Tested with WP 2.0.4 on Ubuntu 12.10 AMD64 right now and still not working

No, I’m running it on a physical machine …

For me with 2.0.4 WP now detects my NIC as inactive.

does anyone have a answer yet?

I have all packages installed, but it does not pick up network adapters. I can see them in “inactive”, but thats it.

"sni-qt/3440" WARN 20:15:06.148 void StatusNotifierItemFactory::connectToSnw() Invalid interface to SNW_SERVICE Opening database file: "/home/ben/.local/share/data/WhatPulse/whatpulse.db" Opened database in: 240 ms "/home/ben/.local/share/data/WhatPulse/whatpulse.wpw"

Weird, my network interface was working fine before, but then the internet was cut off for a short period of time. Once it was back on, my previously working interface is now inactive.

mine was working but now is not.

However, I found out today if I connect to my openvpn connection (not as main route) the wireless/wired connection then gets picked up by whatpulse, so for now I’m always connecting to the vpn so the counter works… :expressionless: Atleast its a way to get it working.

NetworkMonitor: Starting interface 2
pcap thread started on interface “eth1”

This is what whatpulse reports when vpn is connected.

Thanks for that hint, this also works for me on Ubuntu 12.10 64bit with WP 2.0.4.

I use the network-manager to connect to my VPN and shortly after the VPN connection is established i get these messages and WP starts counting my traffic:

NetworkMonitor: Starting interface 2
pcap thread started on interface “eth0”

Off topic: Unfortunately there is a bug in the networkmanager which does not autoconnect to VPNs, even if the button “connect automaticly” is checked: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/280571
A fix is allready released, but I don’t know it is applied in Ubuntu 13.04.

First of all (it’s a known issue), what was wrong with my thread that had been started 2 days prior to this one and second, if you will:

That’s all nice and dandy, but how’s it done? In XFCE Raring, Network Connections shows me in the VPN Connections: “Configure VPN…” and “Disconnect VPN” is greyed-out underneath it - so I’m supposed to create a new connection manually? :-0

OpenVPN has to be installed and then bridged, or what? :f If you can’t tell, I’m at a loss here. xD

Edit, 5/17/2013: Nvm., just reading through my old posts, this has nothing to do with it.

I too noticed this couple of weeks back. Whatpulse seems to be detecting interfaces and capturing data only if there are more than two active interfaces. It works out of the box in my netbook which has two interfaces (wired and wireless). In my PC it works only

a) if I connect to an external VPN which creates an extra active interface tun0
OR
b) after I installed vmware which activates a second interface vmnet1 upon boot.

A VMWare interface is a great solution.

This issue is not fixed in WP 2.1, but at least we got this workaround.

Could anyone with this problem post the result of the command ‘ifconfig’ here?

Guys, I fixed my problem completely by uninstalling the old WinPCap, and just downloading the newest one off of their website. I don’t know if this is the problem for you guys, but it fixed my problem.

Probably not, as WinPcap is for Windows, not Linux.

Thanks, that is helpful.

Could you also post the content of /proc/net/dev?

I’ve just downloaded WhatPulse 2.1.1 64bit and am still having the problems (Linuxmint 14). Additionally, the program now crashes, whenever I plug or unplug the network or enable/disable the WiFi-Card.

  • Wireless is detected and the traffic is counted
  • Ethernet is detected as “unknown” and traffic is not counted

Here’s my Information if it’s helpful:

Start of the program:

output of ifconfig:

output of “cat /proc/net/dev”:

and here’s the crashlog:

Thanks that helps. Fix willl be in the next release.

Sorry, missed this post. Please find the information below.

Network monitor works in case 1 and 2 only and it stop as soon as i stop either of the services (essentially taking the third interface down).

Hope this helps.
